The company Varela Hermanos was founded in 1908 by a young Spanish immigrant, Don José Varela Blanco. This plant was the first such enterprise founded in the Republic of Panama. In 1936, the 3 eldest sons - Jose Manuel, Plinio and Julio - persuaded their father to start distilling sugar cane to make rum. Since then, this company has been the leader in the production of alcoholic beverages in Panama.

According to ancient technology for the production of rum, cut sugar cane is crushed, extracting juice from it. Molasses is then created by boiling the concentrated juice. The young rum is distilled during the rainy season and aged in small white oak barrels. At the final stage, it is filtered and bottled.

Currently, the company owns 1,200 hectares of sugar cane plantations, from which 65 thousand tons of cane are harvested per year and 1 million boxes of rum are produced from it, which accounts for 90% of the domestic market for strong alcohol.
